MWH Wins Multimillion Dollar Climate Change Contract for the European Commission

Broomfield, Colo., December 7, 2009 – MWH, the global wet infrastructure sector leader and provider of environmental engineering, construction and strategic consulting services, has been awarded a $4.5 million contract to provide the European Commission with strategic advisory services for the implementation of the EU Global Climate Change Alliance (GCCA).

Through the GCCA, the EU aims to work with developing countries, mostly located in Africa, Asia and the Pacific Islands, to integrate climate change adaption and mitigation measures into regional and national development strategies. According to all predictions, these countries will be the hardest hit by the adverse effects of climate change while having at the same time the least capacity to react and adapt to these climate impacts.

MWH and its consortium partner, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), won the contract through a competitive call for proposals and will undertake a large spectrum of advisory services, including knowledge management, capacity building and good governance. The first activity of the project will be to organize and manage a side event that presents the MWH strategic advisory program to high level representatives of the beneficiary countries of the GCCA, which will take place on December 14 during the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen.

“Every day, our team works to solve the critical challenges related to climate change, and scarcity of resources.  We are pleased to be among such notable agencies who are working for the same purpose,” said Bob Uhler, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of MWH. “By using our collective experience and knowledge, we will be able to develop actionable strategies, especially in those areas most impacted by the effects of climate change.”

Assistance provided under the GCCA is proposed to focus on five areas: implementing concrete adaptation measures; reducing emissions from deforestation; enhancing participation in the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM); helping poor countries to be better prepared for natural disasters, and integrating climate change into poverty reduction strategies.
